Joy Is a Choice: Being Joyful in the Bible

    January 18, 2019 /

I love Barefoot Contessa. Her cooking is top-notch, and I just want to be in the kitchen alongside her chatting, laughing, and making roast chicken and lemon bars. And her relationship with her adorable hubby, Jeffrey? Can you say Relationship Goals? She subsequently catapulted herself to success with numerous bestselling cookbooks and a show on Food Network. One of her cookbooks is named “Back To Basics.” Even cooks at Ina Garten’s level recognize the need to execute the basics well. I…

Being Faithful in a Relationship: What Ari Mahler the Jewish Pittsburgh Nurse Teaches Us

    December 4, 2018 /

On October 27, 2018, Robert Bowers was charged with the Tree of Life massacre. He had walked into The Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh with an AR-15 and three handguns yelling “All Jews must die! Death to the Jews!” And tragically, eleven did. Robert Bowers was critically injured and transported to Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital for treatment. He continued his verbal rampage at the hospital’s ER department. I can’t even imagine that scene.   Here’s how the President of the hospital, Dr. Jeff Cohen of Allegheny General, described it. He’s Jewish by the way. This heart-rending story received worldwide coverage, but what happened next…

How to Show Your Partner Unconditional Love

    October 23, 2018 /

In July of 1961, the Green Bay Packers football team was gathered for the first day of training camp. The previous season had ended with a painful defeat when they threw away a lead late in the 4th quarter and lost the NFL Championship to the Philadelphia Eagles. The off-season was brutal, and the players were looking forward to focusing on new things they could do to help them win a championship. Their coach, Vince Lombardi, had a different idea. “Gentlemen,” he said, holding a pigskin in his right hand, “this is a football.”  Lombardi was coaching a group of professional athletes who had come within minutes the previous season of…

    D E P E N D E N T

    August 31, 2018 /

This article is reprinted with the permission of the author and a dear friend of mine, Hayley Decker. Enjoy!  I’ve always prided myself on being a self-sufficient and independent woman. I AM WOMAN – HEAR ME ROAR, you know? And though this mindset has in some ways gotten me through horribly difficult seasons, like a divorce when I felt that being “self sufficient” was a necessity, it also created a dangerous form of pride in me that has been a hard one to shake. Unfortunately, I don’t think that I’m alone amongst my fellow women. Let’s talk about being self-sufficient. We “can” do most things on our own, can’t we?…
