She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy

“She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.” Country fan or not, this is a cool song.  It’s by Kenny Chesney.  It’s a wonderful thing when a couple can share an interest or a passion.  In my case, Lori loves my Challenger.  She calls it “Hulkster.”  There’s actually a good technical reason for this.  The car’s engine has several modes, from 4-cylinder MDS mode to an all-out scream facilitated by Variable Valve Timing.  The car’s personality changes instantly, like the Incredible Hulk.   It was her observation the first time I hit the gas in our new car that it behaves this way.  She was as excited as I was.  We shared a giddy laugh about it over lunch.

Lori understands this stuff because she actually listens when I talk about it.  She shows support. She can explain the intricacies of Funny Car racing since we’ve spent years together not just talking about it, but doing it together.   This is one of the primary ingredients in a strong bond.  When you can share your excitement about anything with someone special, that will just fuel the fire and your relationship becomes deeper.  You will enjoy spending time together.  You will enjoy your passion more too.  Your partner will provide input and insight that you don’t have, making that passion even more exciting.  It’s one of those feedback loop things that feeds on itself and builds momentum.

One of her passions is cooking.  To say that I benefit from this interest would be an understatement.  But recently we took a cooking class together with a top executive chef.  I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would.  That’s another lesson.  Often, by exploring your partner’s interest, you expand your own horizons and can make some fascinating discoveries.

The importance of listening to your mate is a concept that Lori has covered, but it can’t be overstated.  Sharing a passion and showing support is a great way to really get to know one another intimately, to truly enjoy your quality time together, and ultimately to grow the relationship into something that you both will cherish.
